If the fluid is low, find the leak before topping it off and calling it done. Cooler lines, axle seals, pan gaskets, and radiator transmission coolers are common leak points.
The solution: diagnose first, buy the right replacement
Before buying a used transmission, transmission control module, valve body, or torque converter, match the part carefully. Transmission fitment is more specific than many buyers expect. Engine size, drivetrain, production date, gear ratio, connector style, and option codes can all matter.
Start with the VIN and the tag or casting numbers on the original unit. Compare photos when possible, especially connectors, mounts, sensors, and cooler line locations. A listing that says “fits Camry” or “fits F-150” is not enough if the model had multiple transmissions that year.
Used OEM parts can be the smart play when the original part is expensive new or discontinued. A good used transmission control module, valve body, shifter assembly, cooler line, or mount can restore function without paying dealer pricing. For full transmission assemblies, ask about mileage, warranty terms, and whether the donor vehicle ran and shifted before removal.
